April 1 is the 50th Anniversary for Apple, founded on April 1, 1976.
About David
David Pogue, a journalist, is on a book tour promoting his book “Apple: The First 50 Years.” It is a hardcover book and also available as an audio book. It is moving up on the non-fiction best seller chart at # 6. That is pretty popular! It is a great read. Well researched. Great color illustrations and awesome interviews. You might recognize him as a former columnist on the New York Times, and a current CBS Sunday Morning News contributor. I have heard David years ago in the 90’s at Mac World Expo user group breakfasts. He is very entertaining.
If you are into Apple history, trivia, and devices you will definitely love his book. Especially if you have been using Apple products for a number of years. If you are not that deep into technology, it still might be something interesting to listen to on a weekday afternoon.
That is what we want to know. Will you come?
We scheduled this as a special session on Thursday, April 9 at Rohan Rec Center. David will start his book tour talk at 2:30. Doors open at 2:15 PM. You can listen to David talk about history, trivia, things you never knew about Apple. Plus pre-purchase his book for pickup that afternoon at Rohan.
The Book Discount
His 608-page book lists for $50. On Amazon, it goes for around $38. As a user group member, our discount price is $29. (Actually, $28.89. So we make 11 cents.)
To get this discount, we need to pre-order with the publisher. We will distribute books when we meet on Thursday, April 9. So, we need to place a minimum order of 10 books to get the discount. Granted, you can order on Amazon or visit the local Barnes & Noble if you prefer. We do have an order/ RSVP form linked below. In a group of over 600 members we need to order 10 books.
The Book Tour Event
How do we get David to come to The Villages? Well, in our correspondence, he offered twice to do a book tour. Twice. I think sunny Florida sounds inviting to someone living up north in chilly Connecticut. Plus he wants to sell books.
However, he needs a good turnout of user group members for his book tour. That does not mean buy, though I am sure he is encouraging that to happen. Maybe you bought already. Great. So we secured a large room at Rohan, seating up to150 people. So we need some commitment from you. He will fly in if we have a large enough audience.

Use this form to reserve (or not reserve) a discounted copy of his book and let us know if you will attend. Still do the form, whether ordering a book or your decision on attending/ not attending. Again, we need a good turnout. Please reply by Sunday March 29.

Here are a few things to keep in mind: you can snag a fantastic deal on his book, and you can meet him in-person at the book tour. Plus, you don’t have to buy the book to attend the event! We really need to get the word out, so we’ll need to get a count of how many people are buying a book and are planning to come. We have the room and don’t want to cancel. Also, David needs to book his flight. So we need to act fast.
Book Distribution
We will distribute books when we meet April 9 at a Rohan. Payments can be made by cash or check at the meeting. If you don’t pick up your book on that date we will sell it. We should have many other attendees interested and wished they ordered.
